The Just Fossil Fuel Transitions Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence  is rooted in the actions implemented since 2020 as the evolution of the Centre of Excellence on Climate Justice created under the Erasmus + Programme 2014-2020. The mission and vision of this new proposal is to create a Centre of Excellence which works as a hub to generating, exchanging and gathering scientific knowledge to support EU policy-making in implementing proactive strategies and plan to design alternative, fair and peaceful fossil-fuel just transition scenarios.

The centre responds to the need of foster dialogue between the academic world, society and policy makers by a permanent roundtables where discuss and reflect about the added value of the Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty (FFNPT) initiative for accelerating the effort of EU on non-proliferation and global disarmament of fossil fuel industry for defining an economic diversification and a real net-zero carbon emission scenario to a wider public, bringing them closer to the EU climate pledges and directives.

The main objectives of the Centre are:

  • To consolidate the knowledge about the Just Fossil Fuel Transition supporting EU policymaking and strengthening the role of the EU within Europe and worldwide, promoting excellence in teaching and research of EU studies facilitating career development for next generations;
  • To create a structured contexts, based on the 4 priorities defined by the Action for Climate Empowerment (ACE) Plan sets during COP27, to foster dialogue between the academic world, society, local, regional, state and EU level policy makers, civil society actors, representatives of the different levels of education and of the media in the field of transition policies and actions to support the phase out from fossil fuels at difference scale;
  • To promote beyond academia and specialized audiences, to reach out to a wider public, bringing the EU closer to the people, promoting public diplomacy, EU values, and make visible the commitments of European Union on climate action and policies, social cohesion and a constructive cooperation in order to support international societal changes in the path of a fair and peaceful transition from fossil fuels.
