A Global Approach to Mapping Surface Urban Heat Islands Using Open Data and Collaborative Technology
We are pleased to announce the publication of the new open-access scientific article “A Global Approach to Mapping Surface Urban Heat Islands Using Open Data and Collaborative Technology”, featured in the Journal of Sustainable Geosciences: People, Planet and Prosperity (Elsevier, 2025) on 6 November 2025.
The study—developed through collaboration between the SCIFT Laboratory (Officina di Scienza, Climattivismo, Immaginazione, Formazione e Tecnologia), researchers from differen universities (Bologna, Torino, Padova, Parigi) and institutions (ENEA), and the Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence on Just Fossil Fuel Transition at the University of Padua—introduces the first global open-source algorithm for analysing urban heat islands and climate extremes in cities.
