The Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence on Just Fossil Fuel Transition is a member of the International Rights of Nature Tribunal, an independent forum established under the auspices of the Global Alliance for the Rights of Nature (GARN). The Tribunal provides a platform for advancing the recognition and implementation of the Rights of Nature through legal innovation, expert dialogue, and support for communities confronting environmental and climate injustices.

The International Rights of Nature Tribunal is a global civil society initiative that advances the recognition and enforcement of the Rights of Nature. Convened by the Global Alliance for the Rights of Nature (GARN), the Tribunal provides an independent forum where communities, Indigenous Peoples, accademics, legal experts, and environmental and climate defenders present evidence of ecological destruction and violations of Nature’s rights.
Although its decisions are not legally binding, the Tribunal plays a crucial role in strengthening international environmental jurisprudence, raising global awareness, and supporting affected communities. Through public hearings, expert testimony, fieldwork activities to validate the data collected and implement the socio-environmental measures identified and agreed upon by the communities and legal opinions, it promotes accountability for environmental harms while contributing to the development of an Earth-centred legal framework based on ecological and climate justice.
The Tribunal serves as a bridge between grassroots struggles, scientific knowledge, and legal innovation, demonstrating how the Rights of Nature can become a practical tool for protecting ecosystems, defending Indigenous territories, and advancing climate and environmental justice worldwide.
